The Catholic Charismatic Renewal began in 1967 at a retreat weekend about the Holy Spirit with a group of students at Duquesne University.  Since then the Roman Catholic expression of the Charismatic Renewal has grown to over 20 million active members throughout the world.

The authentic Roman Catholic expression of the Charismatic Renewal is lived out and experienced in prayer groups that hold prayer meetings to which anyone can come and participate.  They are clearly Roman Catholic, and subscribe to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and are under obedience to their legitimate pastors appointed by their local Bishop.

What makes a prayer group Charismatic?

Catholic Charismatic Prayer groups rely on the Holy Spirit to animate the prayer and praise.  They tend to be Trinitarian.  Prayer in the charismatic prayer group is mostly Christ-Centered or Father-Centered in their expression.  Although the Saints and Mary may be mentioned, they are not the focus of devotion or prayer at the charismatic prayer meeting. Charismatic prayer is an open prayer form, which relies on the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and spontaneity, rather than liturgical or devotional “closed” forms like the Rosary.  Charismatic prayer groups have a number of identifying traits:

· Praise and Worship music, enthusiastically played and sung, with active participation of the assembled.

· Sometimes dancing, waving of hands in the air, uplifted hands in prayer.

· Most obvious is audible prayer in tongues or “glossolalia”-an ecstatic and esoteric speech used for prayer and praise.  Sometimes it is sung and others, in speech-tones of voice.

· Prophetic or “word gifts”-these are messages spoken “for the Lord and in the name of the Lord.”  They may be either exhortative or admonishing, and usually call for a response from the community members.

· Healing prayer with the laying on of hands, sometimes accompanied by a falling phenomenon, where the Holy Spirit moves so strongly that the strength of the person fades and they swoon to the floor.

· Often a sense of awe descends on the assembly as the presence of the Lord is felt.

· Scripture sharing that tends to be woven into a collective message from God.

· The Baptism of the Holy Spirit, or the Release of the Holy Spirit-an experienced grace which imparts a sense of powerful faith, and quickens in the recipient the hunger for scripture, prayer and to eliminate attachment to sin in their lives.  It also often times is marked by the gifting of some charisms for ministry such as the gift of tongues, or prophecy or discernment of spirits (cf. I Cor 12).

How do I find a charismatic prayer group in Colorado?

In Colorado, recognized Catholic charismatic prayer groups are listed on this website.  You can follow this link (click link) and locate the prayer group nearest you in your (arch)diocese.  Or you can ask your pastor.  We do not recommend that you go to a group that is not listed by either of these two means because the doctrinal content or attitudes toward the church may not be helpful to your Catholic faith.
